Hey quilty friends, welcome to Week 2 of the Sugar Coated Stars Quilt Along!
This might be my favorite part…we are cutting and organizing our fabric this week!
Fabric Preparation
Proper fabric preparation is such an important step that I think a lot of quilters forget about or skip. I know it’s fun to jump into a new quilting project, but making sure that you are getting started on the right foot is even more important! So please don’t skip it!
Fabric preparation can look different for everyone and may not be the same for each project. For me, it’s usually the same. You might be saying, well Ledine, what’s your routine? I’m glad you asked because I have a blog article all about proper fabric preparation! Read my tips and tricks HERE for preparing your fabric for your project!
For my QAL version of Sugar Coated Stars, I chose Cheer and Merriment Collection by Fancy That Design House for Moda Fabrics. I really wanted a new Christmas quilt and these colors and the theme was just perfect!
Cutting & Organizing
If you follow me on social media, you will know that I LOVE organizing my cut fabric. Not only is it visually satisfying but I really believe that staying organized helps with efficiency. Chaos in the sewing room can be distracting and overwhelming. So let’s avoid it! In the Sugar Coated Stars quilt pattern, I’ve included printable labels to organize your fabric pieces in different stages of the pattern.
This week, you will be using the labels to organize your fabrics. You’ll use the remainder of the labels as we work our way through the pattern. They are a true time saver, as you won’t need to reference back to any notes or pictures to remember which fabric is which! As we progress through the pattern and you begin constructing the units for your blocks, you’ll find they are handy for sure!
After my fabrics are starched, I start cutting! I love my Martelli 45mm rotary cutter! It is so ergonomic and I find that I can cut all my fabrics for a project with less time and less strain on my wrist/hand. Want one for yourself? Now my all of my fabric is cut, organized and ready for piecing next week! They are so cute and organized!
