How to Make Fabric Bunting Flag Garland
DIY Fabric Bunting Garland Flags + Free Printable Templates

Gathering Your Supplies:
To get started, gather the following materials:
- Free printable templates - available in my free pattern library - click HERE
- Assorted fabrics in your preferred colors and patterns - I used this adorable Art Gallery Fabrics Boardwalk Collection for summer!
- Scissors or rotary cutter and cutting mat - I like to use a smaller 28mm rotary cutter for more precision
- Sewing machine and thread - other usual sewing supplies
- 1/2” Double-fold binding tape - purchase pre-made or make your own
- Pins or Wonder Clips
- Purple Thang or fabric turner to pushing out points
Printing and Preparing the Template:
Print out the free printable template, which you can access at on my free pattern page HERE. Make sure to check the 1” test square to make sure the PDF printed properly. Enlarge or reduce the size as you choose. Cut the templates with scissors and let’s go!
Cutting and Preparing the Fabric:
Select your favorite fabrics and lay them flat. I used this adorable Art Gallery Fabrics Boardwalk Collection which is perfect for a summer celebration! I was able to cut 3 complete flags (double sided) from a 1/4 yard of fabric. Using fat quarters would not yield as many. Each flag uses 2 pieces. TIP: Place the fabrics right sides together so you can cut the 2 pieces together at once! EXTRA TIP: If you are using directional fabrics, make sure they are oriented in the right direction before cutting!
Place the template on top of each fabric piece, ensuring that the design aligns with your desired look. Trace around the template with a fabric pen or chalk, and then cut out the fabric triangles along the traced lines or cut directly around the template. I like to use my 28mm rotary cutter to get a more precise cut. Using the smaller size is easier to manage and control as well. Repeat this step until you have enough fabric triangles for your desired length of bunting flags.
Each flag top finishes between 4.5” - 5”
Assembling the flags:
With right sides together, sew around the edges of each flag, leaving the top open. Clip around the corners and edges or cut the edges with pinking shears.
Flip inside out and use a Purple Thang or fabric turner to poke out the edges. But don’t push through your seams! Give these a nice press and then top stitch approximately 1/8” around the edges for a finished look.
Sewing the Flags Together:
Decide how long you want your fabric bunting. Allow for 10-12” (or more) for each edge and approximately 2” in between each flag. You can use pre-purchased double fold binding or make your own. You can use any size double fold binding you’d like. I used 1/2”-because I made my own from fabric strips, I cut my strips at 2”, pressed in half and then pressed the raw edges inside.
Next, open the double-fold binding tape and insert the top edge of one fabric flag into the folded side of the tape, aligning the raw edges. Pin the fabric in place or use wonder clips to secure it. Continue pinning each fabric triangle along the length of the binding tape, leaving a small gap between each flag, I left 2” in between.
Using a sewing machine, stitch along the entire length of the binding tape, securing the fabric flags in place. Ensure that your stitches catch both sides of the binding tape to create a neat finish.
Finishing Touches:
Once you have sewn all the fabric triangles to the binding tape, trim any excess threads. If desired, fold the binding tape over the raw edge of the last fabric triangle and secure it with a few stitches to create a finished end.
