Aurifil Artisan Challenge - March 2024
I'm absolutely thrilled to share my latest project as part of the Aurifil Artisan March Challenge, where I've created a delightful flying geese pattern for this adorable quilted lumbar throw pillow.
Picture this: a cozy throw pillow adorned with a mesmerizing flying geese blocks, brought to life using the magic of foundation paper piecing. But wait, it gets even better—we're diving headfirst into a world of muted rainbow colors, handpicked fabrics, and matching threads from the ever-inspiring Aurifil Thread collection!

We decided on these beautiful solids in Robin Egg, Old Green, Terracota, Eucalyptus, Orchid and Honey. Aren’t they beautiful? Know what makes them even more exciting? You guessed it…matching Aurifil Thread!

For this bundle, I used Aurifil Thread in 5006, 4173, 1154, 2908, 2515, and 2145 in 40 weight. I used my standard Aurifil Thread in White 2024 in 50 weight for piecing my fabrics. I always reduce my stitch length on my Baby Lock Ballad down to 1.0 so that the paper is being perforated while we are sewing, so it’s easier to remove!
Some of my favorite Foundation Paper Piecing tips:
-Use a dab of Sew Line Fabric Glue to secure your initial piece of fabric before beginning your project
-Add a Quarter Inch Rulers and a 28 mm rotary cutter which allows for more control
-I like to use newsprint paper, which is thinner than copy paper. It will still run through most printers and it makes removal of the paper so much easier
-Reduce your stitch length to 1.2 - 1.5. This perforates the paper more and makes remove much easier.
For my final quilting, I used my Baby Lock Ballad sewing machine and quilted these straight lines with the various colors of the 40-weight thread. I also buried my threads using self-threading needles for a finished look!
